In this high-tech world, your smartphone has now become the fourth basic thing after food, shelter, and clothing. The first smartphone, created by IBM, was invented in 1992 and released for purchase in 1994. It was called the Simon Personal Communicator (SPC). Since then as the technology grew so the smartphones…

Remember? The time period when we used to have phones like Nokia 3310 or the phones by Blackberry Company? Comparing those phones with today’s iPhones launched by Apple or any trending companies, these were so small and handy… But in the present world why the smartphones have weird or huge-looking screens???

The reason behind this is not one thing but many. Previously when actually smartphones demand increased (the time period when iOS and Android were launched) the phone’s screen size used to range upto 4 – 4.5 inches. Then the 5 inches smartphone models were launched. Those usually had a rectangular shape and there were bezels from all four sides. Those screen to body ratio used to be 16:9. For Example:-

The picture here indicates bezels.

Till this the story was pretty simple. But then on 3rd November, 2017 smartphone tradition got changed. On this day, Apple announced it’s iPhone X.

This smartphone took tech world one step ahead allowing manufacturers to upgrade their vision in hardware development. The Apple’s iPhone X introduced the notch concept in the smartphone world. The notch is nothing but a small or irregular cut-out on the phone screen. And then the screens started looking very unfamiliar, ugly.

But there are both advantages and disadvantages of the notch on the phone screens. The biggest advantage is that the viewing experience of the smartphone’s screen. We get a huge display and good quality viewing for binge watching on OTT platforms. Moving towards the technical part, we cannot expand whole screen because there are several things (hardware components) which are necessary to be hosted inside the device. Those include your Front Camera, Earpiece(Speaker for hearing calls), and some sensors like proximity sensor, and the notification LED. Now today in this span of time, several notches came into existence. There are no Notch smartphone / pop-up camera, notch ‘O’ displays, water drop notches and the hole punches.

Pop-up Or No Notch Display.
Water-drop Notch Display.
Punch-hole Camera.

Coming to the disadvantages, the software inside phone needs to be optimized to show incoming notifications and several such things, and now there’s a personal opinion of everyone about liking or disliking the notches.

Also to get rid of those notches there is a new technology in works of in-display camera and speaker(for earpiece). Nevertheless, the science in technical world will go on upgrading day-by-day and we might be able to see new concepts…
